Site Location: INA Market and Surrounding Area
Area: 5 Acres
Introduction:
Urban Development and growth are inevitable in a settlement. As the population grows and the settlement spreads, the need for larger spaces for public activities such as shopping and recreation increases. The importance of an integrated work centre is evident from the fact that modern and urban development is based on a close locational relationship between work and residence.
The main objective of this thesis is to derive a design concept for INA market. An integrated plan incorporating urban design, landscape, traffic and transportation schemes, safe pedestrian walkways, parking areas, recreational and cultural centres, commercial blocks and the already existing retail market is to be prepared for its Re-development.
Underlying Issue
INA Market complex was originally designed post-independence to serve the needs of the neighbouring colonies. However with the changing Urban Landscape as well as the cultural and social landscape it has continued to evolve. Now it is one of the most important areas in terms of transit and footfall in the city.
Site:
The INA Market Complex location is located in South Delhi Zone D as per the Master Plan Delhi 2021. The current redevelopment project comprises of the area covering the four markets including INA Market. Together it is roughly 5 Acres of Prime Land located on the Aurobindo Marg. INA market complex next to the Dilli Haat on the Aurobindo Marg is surrounded by many such precincts which are under redevelopment. Bharaphulla phase II is also under construction and is an extension from the AIIMS flyover roundabout.
Vision and Objectives:
The vision of this thesis is to re-develop the INA Market complex and propose an Urban City centre. It is a Central District in a city, usually typified by a chunk of concentration of retail and commerce buildings. The Site is an ideal location for the same as it already has dual metro corridor on the site. The project falls under Transit-oriented development and the norms for the same have been incorporated while designing the project.
The design idea for this project would require mapping of the existing site and the heavy context that surrounds it. Each and every function on the site would be a response to the context of the site both on a macro and a micro-level.
